The First Moorlands Totilas Foal Has Arrived

Today, sunday January 23rd, will go into the equestrian history books as the day that the first foal of Totilas was born.The Totilas x Clavecimbel mare was born around 7 AM this morning at the University veterinary clinic at Utrecht, Netherlands. Her name is Moorlands Guinevere, named after the wife of King Arthur.

Owner Tosca Visser and Edward Gal, who enjoyed many successes with father Totilas, visited the clinic to admire the new born foal. Arnd Bronkhorst was on the spot to do an exclusive photo shoot. The Visser family is expecting two more Totilas foals this spring.

When Leon Melchior started his studfarm, his eye fell on Hanover straight away. That is where the world's best showjumping horses in those days were coming from: Askan, Donald Rex, Erle, Feiner Kerl, Goldika, Lavendel, Simona... Particularly because Leon Melchior himself - although briefly, in view of his age- had started in international competitions, he managed to lay his hands on several Hanoverian sport mares.

Many of the present stock descend from mares of this first period, such as Girl-Z and Fairness-Z. But also Holstein was in the picture already: Melchior's own showjumping horse Heureka-Z laid the basis for the most important female line of Zangersheide, that of Ratina-Z. In a time in which the horses performing at the desirable level were almost exclusively geldings, getting hold of even those few mares was an art by itself. Meanwhile Hanover had changed course. The classic jumping giants were not "modern" enough and Leon Mechior saw that the sport potential of his beloved Hanoverians was gradually waning. With the introduction of the French stallion Almé Z, Melchior killed two birds with one stone.

The formidable Normandy sire fitted precisely in the picture which Gotthard & Co. had left behind at Zangersheide. Besides, Almé Z had a totally different bloodline: although renowned in France as the "golden combination" Ibrahim-Ultimate xx, it was unknown in Hanover. In addition, Almé Z had more than proven himself in the sport. The result was what genetics call "the heterosis effect", meaning: extra vitality by crossing two different breeds. This worked so well that the next step produced something entirely different. Another sport performer of repute, Ramiro Z, placed a solid Holstein stamp on the Hanoverian-French Zangersheide-mix in following generations.

At that moment the small Holstein breeding region had overtaken the much greater Hanover, where successful showjumping was concerned. When the Zangersheide foals eventually carried three quarters or ore foreign blood, the Hanoverian studbook manager decided in 1992 to no longer provide Z foals with a Hanoverian brand. This created the birth of Studbook Zangersheide, a liberal showjumping horse studbook following Leon Melchior's well-known concept. Studbook Zangersheide is recognized by the Belgian government and has meanwhile grown into "primus inter pares" in the WBFSH (World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses), a studbook of world standing!

These technical blessings have now become common practice all around. Therefore we can say that Léon Melchior’s pioneering has now obtained a 100 percent social basis. Zangersheide is already occupied with new research such as the further study into the possible heredity of OCD, the more efficient use of sperm by means of endoscope and a diluent, newly developed by Zangersheide. Never before, in the history of dressage, so many new initiatives have been taken. Experiments in judging and new stewarding rules will soon be followed by new actions. The top of the FEI Dressage Comity, Mr. Trond Asmyr and Mr. Frank Kempermanwill tell you all about new developments, during this Global Dressage Forum.

Trond Asmyr is the FEI Dressage and Para-Equestrian Dressage Director. Originally from Norway, Trond Asmyr has an in-depth knowledge of Dressage as a rider, official and administrator. He rode competitively on national level for many years, is a FEI International Dressage judge and was for 12 years on the board of the Norwegian Equestrian Federation He was the Federation’s Vice President for six years, from 2003 to earlier this year.

Frank Kemperman After finishing school he started grooming the show jumping horses of international rider Harrie Wouters v.d. Oudenweijer. In 1978 Frank became manager of the Stud & Show Jumping Stable Zangersheide, in Lanaken, Belgium. In 1981 he became General Manager of the National Stud and Research Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Netherlands, and in 1985 he changed job and sport when he became General Manager of Soccer Club MVV – Maastricht . It did not take much time to come back to the horse world. Frank Kemperman was General Manager of Racecourse Schaesberg from 1987 to 1989, when he started as a Director of BCM Belgium, being responsible for the organization of many international horseshows. He was scouted by the Aachen organizers and was appointed as General Manager and Sports Director of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein, organizer of the World Equestrian Festival CHIO Aachen and World Equestrian Games 2006 (Germany). Until today Frank Kemperman is very successful in developing the Aachen show to be one of the biggest sporting events in the world and the biggest sporting event in Germany (more spectators then Formula racing!). Next to his job in Aachen, Kemperman is Sport-Director of the CSI-W / CDI-W ´s Hertogenbosch – The Netherlands and of the World Championships for young horses at Zangersheide – Lanaken (Belgium). He was the program Director of the Equestrian Tribute to Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and was awarded a Knight ship in 2007. After his successful input as member of the Task Force Group, he has been appointed as chairman of the Dressage Committee in Nobember 2009.

Sire: Carthago Z showed promise as a future show jumping star early at his performance test he earned a 9.5 for free jumping and a 10 for jumping talent! Carthago Z has had a very illustrious show jumping carrier winning many grand prix’s as well as competing in 15 Nations Cups, in 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games Carthago Z finished 11th place individually along with rider Jos Lansink, the pair competed for Holland in there second Olympics at the Sydney Olympic games.

Carthago Z is a proven breeder of show jumpers already having horses jumping at the highest levels; he is also the sire of several approved stallions.

His dam, Folia, showed great jumping potential herself, and produced the licensed stallions Latus I and II, as well as the two Capitols, and famous daughters Kausa, Lektion (eventing} and U-Capitola (dam of Lord Capitol}. Folia’s dam, Vase, was a full sister, Romanus who competed with success with Hans Günter Winkler, despite the horse’s aversion to water jumps.
