The Royal Warm blood Studbook of the Netherlands (Koninklijke Vereniging Warmbloed Paardenstamboek Nederland (KWPN)) is the registry and studbook for Dutch Warmblood Sport Horses. Breeders of the Royal Dutch Sporthorse have been organised for many years. A breeding registry of horses traditionally referred to as warmbloods dates back to 1887. Initially, numerous regional studbook organisations populated the Netherlands with definite rivalries existing between them. Over time, breeders realised that working together toward a common goal would be more effective than working separately. One by one, the studbooks began to merge.
In the end, two remained. The NWP (North Netherlands Warmblood Horse Studbook) representing the north of the Netherlands and the VLN (Organisation for the Advancement of Agricultural Harness Horse Breeding in the Netherlands) representing the rest of the country. The NWP and VLN studbooks merged in 1970 and became known as the Warmblood Horse Studbook in the Netherlands (WPN). In 1988, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix bestowed the title Royal on the organisation to mark its 100 year anniversary as an official Warmblood studbook. Since then, it has been called The Royal Warmblood Studbook of the Netherlands, also known by the Dutch acronym KWPN.
The KWPN breeding goal has been continually revised over the decades based on practical need. Initially, horses were bred for farm work. These horses varied in type by region, and type was primarily determined by regional soil conditions. The heavy Groning type dominated the clay soil areas, while the lighter Gelder type dominated the pasture lands. After World War II, mechanisation replaced the horse's pulling power, significantly altering the traditional bond between the farmer and the horse. During this period, equestrian sport, which had been reserved for wealthy citizens and army officers, became popular.
The sport demanded a different kind of horse, which required a new breeding program. Using Thoroughbred stallions and stallions from horse breeding regions in France and Germany, breeders, over time, transformed the agricultural horse of old into the modern sport horse. This transformation occurred in relatively short time. The old existing selection against genetic defects was supplemented with new strict selections for desired conformation and movement. The stallion selection process was continuously revised in order to approve stallions that would demonstrably advance the desired breeding goal.
Even now, nowhere in the world are stallions so strictly selected for conformation, movement, health, temperament, and sport ability as within the KWPN. Furthermore, its offspring selection is unique compared with other riding horse studbooks. The KWPN horse holds a leading position worldwide in both the jumping and dressage disciplines. The keuring system offers an evaluation of horses against the standard for KWPN horses worldwide. Information is compiled on the keuring results, thereby providing feedback for breeders and the community at large on the success of various bloodlines and breeding choices. Mares and stallions can also receive ‘predicates’ based on the quality of their offspring at keuringen. A keuring is an educational and marketing opportunity.
Predicates often appear after a horse’s name and recognise different aspects of merit. Ster, awarded to mares who have been presented at a keuring and achieved 145 points from the conformation assessment and either the movement or jumping assessment. The mare should have at least 70 points for the conformation assessment and 60 points for movement. Keur, awarded to mares and approved stallions. Mares are awarded the predicate voorlopig (provisional) keur when they excel in movement and conformation at the Central Keuring. To earn the keur-predicate, they have to complete a performance test with sufficient marks or be presented in the sport. Approved stallions can be awarded the keur status if they have offspring of at least 7 years of age that excel in both sport as at keuringen.
The predicate PROK is awarded to mares that passed the same rigorous veterinary examination as KWPN approved stallions. Elite, awarded to mares who have fulfilled the requirements for keur AND have a PROK certificate. Sport (springen/dressuur/samengesteld/tuig), awarded to mares that have performed at Z2 + 1 winningpoint level dressage (dres) or Z+ 6 level jumping (spr) or Z+5 cross country (sgw) or have been awarded a certain amount of winning points in harness (tuig). Preferent, awarded to mares and approved stallions. Mares are awarded this predicate when three or more offspring are awarded the ster predicate. Stallions are awarded this predicate when they have offspring of at least 11 years of age, that excel in both sport as at keuringen. Prestatie, awarded to mares who have three or more offspring awarded that have competed to a particular level in either dressage, show jumping, cross country or harness.
The only approved and registered Hanoverian stallions1 in Australia accepted by the Hanoverian Horse Society of Australia (HHSA) for the 2008-2009 breeding season have the annotation of (HHSA).

The Hanoverian Horse Society of Australia (HHSA) does accept other stallions that are unregistered in Australia, however extra fees apply. Please contact the registrar for further details.

Licensed stallion: the first step towards becoming an approved breeding stallion is Licensing. A breeding stallion is licensed by the Hanoverian Society or the Hannoveraner Verband in Germany. This process is usually performed at 2½ years of age and is only the first part of the breeding approval for Hanoverian stallions. Stallions can be licensed by different breed societies, so it is important to check with the HHSA Registrar for which breed societies the stallion is licensed.
Performance Tested Stallion: the second step towards becoming an approved breeding stallion is the Performance Test. A stallion is only performance tested after he is successfully Licensed. Traditionally in Hannover, this was a 100 day test at a selection of testing stations, such as Adelheidsdorf. More recently, 70 day tests are accepted or a 30 day test plus a qualification for the Bundeschampionate. Hanoverian stallions must receive a score of 90 to be approved. Other stallions licensed by different breed societies must achieve a score of 120 or higher to be accepted by the Hanoverian Society, thus ensuring that only the best of non-Hanoverian blood is used.
Licensed through Sport: if a stallion has been Licensed with the Hanoverian Society and the Performance Test is not completed, he can instead, fulfil the performance requirements through sport. A stallion can be accepted as a breeding stallion if he fulfils all of the requirements of a Licensed stallion, provides a full Veterinary report (including x-rays) and has successfully competed at Prix St Georges Dressage, B Grade Showjumping or Medium/Advanced 3DE at FEI approved competitions. There are certain requirements at these levels and this can be obtained from the Society.
Stallions accepted for Hanoverian Breeding: a stallion is only accepted for breeding with the Hanoverian Verband or the HHSA if he has successfully been Licensed AND Performance Tested with the appropriate scores OR successfully Licensed and achieved the performance requirements through sport.
Breeders should always check with the Hanoverian Horse Society of Australia (HHSA) Registrar before purchasing semen or signing breeding contracts to ensure that the stallion they plan to use is accepted by the Hanoverian Society. Stallions cannot advertise that they are licensed Hanoverian Stallions, or use the H logo, unless they have been fully approved with the Hanoverian Society.
